Polystyrene Architectural Series

This first series of sculptures started out its life as Styrofoam packaging. These bits of foam that once held in place a VCR or stereo component and were made to thrown away are full of wonderful negative and positive forms.

View Polystyrene Architectural Series This series was born out of great tragedy for my family and many others. On September 11.2001 my wife Martha and I lost her sister Maile (Hawaiian pronounced “my lee”) in the World Trade Center attacks. After months of hurt and confusion on how something like this could happen I began constructing the Styrofoam to resemble a series of skyscraper influenced buildings. This was my comment on the fragility of life and the false sense of security you get from the structures we visit and live in everyday. I needed someway to help heal others and myself with these constructions.

I cast them in bronze using the lost wax technique. I did this for several reasons. The first reason is my extensive foundry background and knowledge of the process; the next is the profound history of bronze casting and sculpture. It brings such an element of romance to things. I wanted my constructions of Styrofoam, made to be disposed of to become in a way precious. I have redirected these objects place in history. I have made them beautiful by expressing my vision of them.

Works In Progress

This current series is a continuation and adaptation of the previous architectural Polystyrene series of forms. View Works in Progress It has been a few years since the first series. Now the focus has slightly changed. My idea of architectural forms in the Styrofoam pieces still remains but now has evolved into more abstract form. Now the focus is more on the forms positive and negative spaces and how they interact with each other. This series is currently only in the preliminary phase of the process towards finished bronze.
